Tonsillectomy: When Children and Adults Need Surgery

One sore throat does not need an operation. Repeated infections, blocked breathing at night, or a quinsy can.

Tonsillectomy care at Niraaya Hospital, Gandhinagar

Direct answer

Tonsillectomy is removal of the tonsils. It is considered for repeated tonsil infections that disrupt school or work, for tonsils large enough to block breathing or sleep, and after a peritonsillar abscess. It is not the first step for a single sore throat. Dr Khushali Patel, MS ENT, performs throat surgery at Niraaya Hospital, Kudasan, Gandhinagar, including adenoidectomy when children need both.

Key points

  • A useful guide for recurrent infection is seven documented sore throats in one year, five a year for two years, or three a year for three years.
  • The number is a guide. Sleep disruption, abscess, and asymmetric tonsils also matter.
  • Any bleeding from the mouth after tonsillectomy needs same-day ENT review.
  • Antibiotics for every viral cold do not prevent the need for surgery.

When is tonsillectomy recommended?

Tonsils are lymph tissue at the sides of the throat. They help in early immunity, and they also trap infection. Surgery is a discussion when the harm of keeping them outweighs the benefit.

The usual reasons Dr Khushali Patel considers an operation are:

  • Recurrent tonsillitis that is documented and keeps a child out of school or an adult out of work
  • Obstruction, with loud snoring, pauses in breathing, or restless sleep from very large tonsils
  • Peritonsillar abscess (quinsy), especially if it has happened more than once
  • A tonsil that looks asymmetric or otherwise suspicious, which may need removal and testing

A commonly used guide for recurrent throat infection is seven or more episodes in one year, five a year across two years, or three a year across three years. Dr Patel uses the full history, throat examination, and how much life is disrupted. A number by itself is not an order to operate.

Do children also need adenoid surgery?

Adenoids sit behind the nose. In children they can block nasal breathing, cause mouth breathing, and contribute to ear glue and snoring. If that picture is present, adenoidectomy is often done in the same sitting as tonsillectomy. Adults rarely need adenoid removal.

Parents in Kudasan, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad often ask whether the child will “lose immunity”. Tonsils are one part of the immune system, not the whole of it. After a justified operation, children generally handle routine infections as before. The aim is fewer severe throat infections and safer sleep.

What the operation involves

Tonsillectomy is done under general anaesthesia. The tonsils are removed from their beds and bleeding is controlled before the child or adult wakes. It is usually a short-stay procedure. You can read the wider range of procedures on our throat surgery page.

What is recovery like, and when is bleeding an emergency?

The throat is sore for about one to two weeks. Pain often peaks around day five to seven as the white healing layer sits on the beds. Cool soft food, regular pain relief, and enough fluids matter more than any gargle found online.

  • Small specks of blood in saliva can occur. Fresh red bleeding from the mouth does not.
  • Bleeding can happen up to two weeks later. Come back the same day, even if it seems to have stopped.
  • Fever, inability to drink, or dehydration also needs a call.
Patient note: A single viral sore throat needs rest and fluids, not an operation. Book an ENT review if infections keep returning, sleep is noisy and disturbed, or one tonsil looks much larger. Call 9979913366 or visit Niraaya Hospital, near PDPU Crossroad, Kudasan.

Frequently asked questions

Is tonsil surgery painful?

The throat is sore for one to two weeks. Pain is expected and is managed with regular medicines and soft food. The operation itself is under anaesthesia.

At what age can a child have a tonsillectomy in Gandhinagar?

There is no single birthday cutoff. Dr Khushali Patel operates when obstruction or infections justify it, including in young children with sleep-related blockage, after a proper ENT assessment.

How many days of leave are needed?

Plan about one to two weeks away from school or work. Contact sport and hard play wait until the surgeon clears them, because of bleeding risk.

Can tonsils grow back?

Small remnants can occasionally enlarge, especially if removed in very early childhood for obstruction. A full return of both tonsils is uncommon.
