Appendicitis Warning Signs and Laparoscopic Surgery

Pain that starts near the navel and shifts to the right side should not be watched overnight.

Acute appendicitis care at Niraaya Hospital, Gandhinagar

Direct answer

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. Pain often begins around the navel and moves to the right lower abdomen, with nausea, loss of appetite, or fever. It can turn into a surgical emergency within hours. Do not wait if the pain is worsening. At Niraaya Hospital, Kudasan, Dr Neel Patel offers laparoscopic appendectomy for suitable patients from Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.

Key points

  • Shifting right-sided pain with vomiting or fever needs a same-day surgical opinion.
  • Painkillers can blur the picture. Get examined before masking severe pain.
  • Most straightforward cases are removed with laparoscopy.
  • A sealed appendicular mass is sometimes treated with antibiotics first, then planned surgery.

What are the warning signs of appendicitis?

The classic story is pain that starts vaguely in the centre of the abdomen, then settles in the right lower side. Appetite drops. Nausea or vomiting follows. A low fever may appear. Walking, coughing, or pressing and releasing the area can hurt more.

Not every person follows that script. Children, older adults, and pregnant women can present with less obvious pain. Diarrhoea does not rule appendicitis out. If you are unsure, treat it as urgent rather than as a stomach upset.

Signs that should not wait until morning

  • Pain that is steadily getting worse
  • Pain with fever and repeated vomiting
  • A rigid, very tender abdomen
  • Pain after a recent similar episode that was never checked

A burst appendix can spread infection through the abdomen. That is harder to recover from than a planned or early laparoscopic removal.

How is appendicitis confirmed?

The surgeon examines the abdomen first. Blood tests look for infection. Ultrasound is often the first scan in Gandhinagar, especially in children and young women. A CT scan is used when the diagnosis is still unclear. The decision is clinical. A normal early scan does not always end the story if the examination is worrying.

What is laparoscopic appendectomy?

Under anaesthesia, the inflamed appendix is removed through small incisions with a camera. For many patients this means less wound pain and a faster return to walking than a long open cut. Hospital stay is often one day when the appendix has not ruptured. If there is widespread infection, an open operation or a longer stay may be safer.

Some patients arrive with an appendicular mass, a walled-off lump rather than a free perforation. Those cases are sometimes cooled with antibiotics and planned for interval surgery. Dr Neel Patel makes that call after seeing you, not from a symptom list. Details are on our appendix surgery page.

What does recovery look like?

Walking starts the same day in uncomplicated cases. Desk work is often possible within a week. Heavy lifting waits about two to three weeks, or longer if the appendix had ruptured. Fever, increasing pain, vomiting, or redness of a port site after you go home should be reported promptly.

Patient note: If you suspect appendicitis, stop eating and drinking until a doctor advises otherwise, in case surgery is needed the same day. Niraaya Hospital OPD runs Mon–Sat 9 AM–1 PM and 5–9 PM, and Sun 10 AM–1 PM. For severe pain, come in or call 9979913366.

Keyhole appendectomy uses small incisions. Open surgery is reserved for selected complicated cases.

Frequently asked questions

Can appendicitis settle with antibiotics alone?

Selected mild cases are studied for antibiotic-first treatment, but many still need surgery later. A surgeon should make that decision after examination and scans. Do not start leftover antibiotics at home.

Is laparoscopic appendix surgery available near PDPU?

Yes. Dr Neel Patel performs laparoscopic appendectomy at Niraaya Hospital, Kudasan, Gandhinagar, for suitable patients from Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.

How long is the hospital stay?

Uncomplicated laparoscopic removal is often a one-day stay. A ruptured appendix usually needs a longer admission and antibiotics.

What if the pain is on the left side?

Appendicitis is usually right-sided, but early pain can be central. Left-sided pain has other causes. Worsening abdominal pain with vomiting still needs an examination.
