Direct answer
Ear discharge is fluid or pus leaving the ear canal. A short episode with pain can be an outer-ear or middle-ear infection. Discharge that returns for weeks, smells, or follows a known hole in the eardrum needs an ENT examination. Many perforations are watched or repaired with tympanoplasty once the ear is quiet. Dr Khushali Patel provides this care at Niraaya Hospital, Kudasan, Gandhinagar. Do not put oil, water, or unprescribed drops into a discharging ear.
Key points
- Painful discharge for a few days is often an infection and still deserves a look.
- Repeated smelly discharge suggests a chronic middle-ear problem.
- A hole that remains after three months rarely seals on its own.
- Hearing loss with discharge should be tested, not ignored.
What does ear discharge usually mean?
The canal can discharge because the outer ear skin is infected, especially after swimming or after a bud has scratched it. The middle ear can discharge when infection sits behind the eardrum and the drum has a hole, so fluid escapes. The two look similar at home and need different drops. That is why guessing from a pharmacy shelf causes so many repeat visits.
Children in Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad often present after a cold, with a sudden wet pillow and then relief of pain as the drum perforates. Many of those small holes close. Holes that stay open, or ears that have discharged for months, do not follow that hopeful path.
When does a hole in the eardrum need surgery?
Tympanoplasty is repair of the eardrum. Dr Khushali Patel considers it when:
- The perforation has lasted beyond about three months
- The ear keeps getting infected when water enters
- Hearing is reduced because the drum cannot vibrate properly
- The examination and hearing test show the hearing bones are worth assessing too
Surgery is not done on a soaking, infected ear. The infection is treated first, the ear is kept dry, and the operation is planned when the field is quiet. A hearing test guides the plan. If hearing has dropped suddenly as well, read the timing advice in our hearing loss article. Procedure detail is on the ear surgery page.
What to do until you are seen
- Keep water out of the ear while bathing
- Do not insert buds, oil, garlic, or hydrogen peroxide
- Use only drops already prescribed for this episode
- Come sooner if there is facial weakness, severe headache, or swelling behind the ear
Frequently asked questions
Can a perforated eardrum heal without surgery?
Small fresh holes, especially after a cold or a slap injury, often close within a few weeks if the ear stays dry. A hole that is still open after about three months usually needs tympanoplasty.
Is eardrum repair available in Gandhinagar?
Yes. Dr Khushali Patel performs tympanoplasty and treats chronic ear discharge at Niraaya Hospital, Kudasan.
Why does my ear discharge smell?
Long-standing middle-ear infection and trapped debris cause a musty smell. It is a reason to be examined, not a reason to mask it with perfume or oil.
Can I swim with a hole in the eardrum?
Not until the drum has healed or been repaired, and your surgeon has cleared it. Water through a perforation restarts infection.
